Managing Director & Chairman, MODEC Ghana

Theo Ahwireng is a geophysicist, a technical and business leader, with 30 years plus practice in the upstream petroleum industry.  

Theo has played key roles across Ghana’s state segments— In the national oil company (GNPC), where he spent a greater part of his career, he worked on various projects, co-managed non-operated assets and served as Geophysics Manager. He made instrumental contributions in legislation development including the Petroleum Commission Act (Act 821, 2011), Petroleum Exploration and Production Act (Act 919, 2016) and its subsidiary legislation.  

As Ag. CEO of the Petroleum Commission (PC), he led the implementation of the Local Content Regulations (LI 2204, 2013) and nurtured the growth of significant indigenous participation during the field developments of the TEN and Sankofa/Gye-Nyame oil & gas fields in Ghana, culminating in their respective first oils in 2016 and 2017. 

Theo has contributed to high-stake negotiations in Ghana’s upstream sector, as well as in maritime claims at the UN on “Limits beyond 200 nautical miles” and ITLOS (Germany) on the Ghana – Cote D’Ivoire maritime boundary dispute. 

Between 2006 and 2008, he led the successful turnaround of the Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited into a profitable company. Theo served on the Ministerial Advisory Board for Energy and currently on other corporate boards. 

Theo’s leadership has spanned roles in resource management, local content development, and managing, partnering and regulating upstream companies, with a focus on strategically shaping industry developments. 

Currently, Theo is Chairman and Managing Director of MODEC Production Services Ghana JV Ltd and leads the operations and maintenance of MV25 FPSO – (Prof. John Evans Atta Mills in Ghana), enhancing offshore production operations excellence.  

He has a BSc in Physics (KNUST, Ghana), MSc in Exploration Geophysics (ITC, Nl), and an Executive MBA in Finance (UG, Ghana).   He is a Fellow of Ghana Institution of Geoscientists.
